Overview

Calculate signed elevation change, slope percentage, gradient, ratio and angle along a horizontal run.

Formula

ΔH = Hend − Hstart
g = ΔH/Lhorizontal
Slope [%] = 100g
Gradient [mm/m] = 1000g
θ = atan(g) × 180/π
X = Lhorizontal/|ΔH|

Example

From elevation 10 m to 9.8 m over a horizontal run of 20 m, ΔH = −0.2 m, slope = −1%, gradient = −10 mm/m and the slope magnitude is 1:100.

How to use

  1. Check the units, enter the required values and select the available calculation options.
  2. Results update immediately. Correct any highlighted input before using the result.
  3. Choose display precision, copy the result or share the current inputs. Reset restores the example values.

Engineering notes

  • Use horizontal projected length, not the sloping pipe length.
  • Positive means rising from start to end; negative means falling. The ratio is a magnitude. A level run has no finite ratio denominator.

Frequently asked questions FAQ

Is a 1% slope the same as one degree?

No. A 1% slope has an angle of atan(0.01), approximately 0.573°. Percentages and degrees are not interchangeable.

Does display precision change the calculation?

No. Rounding is applied only to displayed results, not intermediate calculations. Small nonzero values use scientific notation. Consider the precision of the original measurements when interpreting results.
