Excel Text Extract Helper

Suggest fixed-position or delimiter-based Excel formulas from source text and the substring you want to extract.

Inputs

Updates as you type

The source text is assumed to be in A1. The first match is used; check the formula on other rows too. Regional settings may require semicolons instead of commas.

Overview

Suggest fixed-position or delimiter-based Excel formulas from source text and the substring you want to extract.

Formula

Fixed position: =MID(A1,start,length)
Start/end: LEFT / RIGHT
Legacy delimiters: MID + FIND + SUBSTITUTE + LEN
Microsoft 365: TEXTBEFORE + TEXTAFTER

Example

For /P-PD2C-PIPE-BP-033 in A1, =MID(A1,4,4) returns PD2C. Microsoft 365 can use =TEXTBEFORE(TEXTAFTER(A1,"-",1),"-").

How to use

  1. Check the units, enter the required values and select the available calculation options.
  2. Results update immediately. Correct any highlighted input before using the result.
  3. Choose display precision, copy the result or share the current inputs. Reset restores the example values.

Engineering notes

  • No AI or external API is used. Suggestions follow simple patterns and use the first occurrence; inspect repeated or irregular data manually.
  • Fixed-position formulas depend on the source layout. Legacy formulas use a marker absent from the sample: confirm it is also absent from the rest of the data.

Frequently asked questions FAQ

What if the target appears several times?

The first match and occurrence count are shown. Review the generated formula and adjust the occurrence number when another match is required.

Does display precision change the calculation?

No. Rounding is applied only to displayed results, not intermediate calculations. Small nonzero values use scientific notation. Consider the precision of the original measurements when interpreting results.
