Unit Conversion Formula Helper

Copy arithmetic or Excel CONVERT formulas that convert the value in cell A1 to another engineering unit.

Inputs

Updates as you type

The source text is assumed to be in A1. The first match is used; check the formula on other rows too. Regional settings may require semicolons instead of commas.

Excel 2016 / 2019 / Microsoft 365

=A1/25.4

Excel 2016 / 2019 / Microsoft 365

=CONVERT(A1,"mm","in")

Overview

Copy arithmetic or Excel CONVERT formulas that convert the value in cell A1 to another engineering unit.

Formula

mm → inch: =A1/25.4
m → ft: =A1/0.3048
kg → lb: =A1/0.45359237
°C → °F: =A1*9/5+32

Example

With 25.4 in A1, =CONVERT(A1,"mm","in") returns 1. The mass-pound code used by CONVERT is lbm.

How to use

  1. Check the units, enter the required values and select the available calculation options.
  2. Results update immediately. Correct any highlighted input before using the result.
  3. Choose display precision, copy the result or share the current inputs. Reset restores the example values.

Engineering notes

  • CONVERT codes can be case-sensitive. Formula unit codes are not always the same as display abbreviations.
  • Adding a unit suffix through cell formatting does not convert the numerical value. Use a formula and label the result column.

Frequently asked questions FAQ

Why is there no CONVERT formula for bar to psi?

This combination uses an explicit arithmetic conversion factor to avoid suggesting an unsupported unit code.

Does display precision change the calculation?

No. Rounding is applied only to displayed results, not intermediate calculations. Small nonzero values use scientific notation. Consider the precision of the original measurements when interpreting results.
