Overview

Find horizontal and vertical coordinate differences, straight distance and the direction angle from the positive X-axis.

Formula

ΔX = X2 − X1
ΔY = Y2 − Y1
Distance = √(ΔX² + ΔY²)
Angle = atan2(ΔY,ΔX) × 180/π

Example

From (0,0) to (3,4), the horizontal difference is 3, vertical difference is 4, distance is 5 and angle is approximately 53.130°.

How to use

  1. Check the units, enter the required values and select the available calculation options.
  2. Results update immediately. Correct any highlighted input before using the result.
  3. Choose display precision, copy the result or share the current inputs. Reset restores the example values.

Engineering notes

  • Angles are counterclockwise from +X, within −180° to +180°. This is not a north-based bearing.
  • Identical points have zero distance and no defined direction angle.

Frequently asked questions FAQ

Does this create an AutoCAD OFFSET line?

No. It calculates differences between two points, not parallel geometry or polyline intersections.

Does display precision change the calculation?

No. Rounding is applied only to displayed results, not intermediate calculations. Small nonzero values use scientific notation. Consider the precision of the original measurements when interpreting results.
